The Mission to Seafarers Round the Island Bike Ride for 2019, kicks off with all participants assembling at the conveniently located Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton. Participants can acquaint themselves with one another the night before event, over drinks and 3 course dinner and meet the team who will be escorting around the island the next day.
Its an early start on ride day on Saturday 27th April. You will load your bags onto the luggage vans and ride a couple of hundred metres to the 7am Red Funnel Ferry terminal and catch the ferry to East Cowes. We grab breakfast on board so no need to waste time at the hotel. On arrival in Cowes we will assemble at St James Church, change to cycling shoes, complete final checks and we aim to be riding by 8am.
We will travel around the island in an auto clockwise direction. Our first break stop is in Yarmouth after which we continue on to take in the Needles with an optional climb up to the vantage point for the famous photo opportunity with the Needles in the background. The route takes us down to the coast at Freshwater bay from where we ride parallel to the sea for several miles until we reach Brightstone for break stop and lunch. Brightstone is the point at which the route splits, with the 41m short route heading North East into the heart of the island to Carrisbrook Castle and the final break stop 6 miles from the finish at the yacht club in West Cowes.
The full RTI continues on its anticlockwise tour of the South of the Island, slight inland now and in the valleys until we reach the coast again at Sandown at the 50 mile mark for our final refuelling stop of the day. We pass through the villages of Bembridge, around the port inlet at St Helens and through Seaview to then come inland again and climb up from sea level to as we head back towards Cowes.
We will celebrate the completion of our RTI in West Cowes. The ferry terminal is a short walk through town, cross over via the chain ferry to pick up the regular service back to Southampton. If you want us to take your bike back with us, it will be safely loaded onto our trucks and protected with blankets to prevent any damage and can be collected the next day.
We look forward to having you on board on this, our inaugural event and one of a series of Round Island adventures hosted by the Mission for Seafarers around the world.
